The Freehand is technically a hostel, although it doesn’t really feel like one. Yes, there are shared dorms and a slightly rowdy pool scene. But there are also clean and modern private rooms. There’s complimentary Panther coffee and fresh guava empanadas served in the lobby at breakfast. And there is an excellent cocktail bar in the form of the Broken Shaker, where the seasonal menu might feature anything from an agave old fashioned to an updated spin on the French 75. The bar menu is short but sweet - try the grits or the housemade ricotta - and makes a perfect foil for all those expertly-crafted cocktails. You’re guaranteed to drink a few too many.
